"Desiree's Baby" is a short story by Kate Chopin. It is a story about how a young girl was adopted and later blossomed into a beautiful woman. Her origins were unknown but the family did not care about things such as that neither did her soon to be husband Armand Aubigny. Soon they were happily married and Desiree bore a son. The son remains nameless throughout much of the story, which speaks to the ambiguity of the characters in the text.
Desiree is living the perfect life, loves her husband, and loves her baby; however, she feels something is coming to take that away. She finds that Armand is being distant and barely talks to her. Then she realizes that it must be her baby that has changed this perfect life. She notices that the baby has darker skin than her own and approaches Armand to ask, “what does it mean?” Armand tells Desiree that their baby is not full white therefore she is not white. Desiree asks if she should leave and without hesitation, Armand says yes. At the end of the story readers find that Desiree has taken to the bayou never to be seen from again and Armand finds out that his mother had African blood.
